History

Date Posted to GIS:
1996
  • 1988: Four hardcopy zoning maps mounted on a large hard backing, which covered the District, had existed through the seventies and eighties. When a zoning update was required the new zone was printed onto paper, cut out, and literally pasted over top of the existing area.
  • 1996: By the mid-nineties this method of maintaining zoning information was not sustainable. Therefore, these large maps were digitized over a 3 month period using Microstation CAD software. A long process of quality assurance followed.
  • 1999: By 1999, the CAD zoning layer was translated to the District's GIS. Significant cleaning was required to eliminate dangles. Additionally, polygons were created and the official zone name was assigned to each polygon.
  • 2000: Once the zoning layer was complete a category called 'Class' that generalized the zones into parent categories was created. This allowed for easier thematic mapping.

Quality

Accuracy
  • Accurate but possibly with some 'slivers'
  • Spatial information is collected and entered using the best method applicable to this dataset.
  • Spatial information is higly accurate and reasonably the best it can be.
  • Where multiple collection/entry methods, the more accurate method is predominant throughout this dataset.
Completeness
  • Spatial information is known to be complete, expected to be complete or very close to complete.

Maintenance

The Clerks or Planning department submit a council adopted amendment (a bylaw) to the GIS department. The Zoning is adjusted in the GIS as required.
